Japanese honeysuckle (Lonicera japonica) is a woody evergreen vine that is very nutritious for deer. It can constitute a major portion of the seasonal diet and in some cases the year-round diet of white-tailed deer in the Southeast. The leaves and seeds also are eaten by cottontail rabbits, northern bobwhites, and eastern wild turkeys.

Allelopathy also involves the ecological communications between species which can positively or negatively influence growth, behavior, reproduction, and survival of associated species.

Assessment of relative damage levels is valuable when precision allows for comparisons across one site and over many sites. Judging recent mechanical injuries from visual criteria, although imperfect, can help gauge the relative amount of damaged tissue visible and estimate the total amount of damaged tissue present.
